Summer weddings in France are magical. Long evenings, beautiful gardens, vineyards in full bloom, and dinners under the open sky create the perfect setting. But in recent years, one thing has become increasingly common—heat waves.
Having photographed weddings throughout Dordogne, Bordeaux, Provence and across France during temperatures exceeding 35–40°C, I’ve seen first-hand how a few thoughtful planning decisions can completely transform the experience. Not only will your guests be far more comfortable, but your photographs will also benefit from softer light, happier expressions, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Here are my biggest recommendations when planning a wedding during extreme summer heat.
1. Plan a Later Ceremony
If there’s one change that makes the biggest difference, it’s moving your ceremony later in the day.
Rather than exchanging vows at 2 or 3pm under the strongest afternoon sun, consider a ceremony between 5:30pm and 7pm, depending on the time of year. Temperatures begin to drop, the light becomes softer and more flattering, and your guests will be far more comfortable.
From a photography perspective, this is one of the easiest ways to elevate your gallery. Softer light means fewer harsh shadows, more natural skin tones, and a much more elegant overall look.
2. Have a First Look and Complete Your Portraits Before the Ceremony
Many couples worry that a later ceremony will push dinner too late into the evening. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution.
A First Look allows you to see each other privately before the ceremony while also completing:
- Couple portraits
- Bridal party photographs
- Immediate family portraits
before guests even arrive.
This means you can enjoy a shorter cocktail hour, guests spend less time standing in the heat, and dinner can begin sooner without feeling rushed. It also gives you more time to actually enjoy your cocktail hour with family and friends.
3. Look for Natural Shade
When choosing your ceremony or reception location, natural shade is almost always more comfortable than relying solely on umbrellas or enclosed tents.
Large mature trees, gardens, vineyards with surrounding woodland, or the shaded side of a beautiful château naturally keep temperatures lower while allowing air to circulate.
Traditional marquees and tents certainly provide shade, but they often trap heat underneath, particularly during still afternoons. While they’re sometimes unavoidable, natural shade usually creates a noticeably cooler environment for both guests and suppliers.
If you have the choice, always consider where the shade will be during the hottest part of the day.
4. Give Yourself Plenty of Time for Golden Hour Portraits
One of the biggest mistakes I see is couples only allowing 10–15 minutes for sunset portraits.
If your timeline allows, I recommend setting aside 30–45 minutes.
Golden hour offers the most beautiful light of the entire day. Harsh shadows disappear, colours become softer, and your photographs take on the timeless, romantic feel that couples often dream of.
It’s also significantly cooler than earlier in the afternoon, making the experience much more enjoyable.
Many couples tell me these portraits become one of their favourite memories from the wedding—a quiet opportunity to step away together, take everything in, and enjoy a few peaceful moments before returning to celebrate with their guests.
5. Use Flowing Fabric Draping Instead of a Traditional Tent
If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony or reception, consider using flowing fabric draping (voilage) overhead rather than a fully enclosed marquee.
Lightweight fabric creates welcome shade while still allowing air to circulate freely. Even a gentle breeze can flow underneath it, helping to keep the space noticeably cooler than a traditional enclosed tent.
From a photographer’s perspective, it’s one of my favourite design choices.
The fabric beautifully softens the harsh summer light, creating flattering illumination for both your ceremony and reception. When the breeze catches the material, it adds movement, texture and elegance that photographs beautifully and enhances the overall atmosphere.
Whether you’re dining beside vineyards, in a château courtyard or beneath mature trees, flowing fabric creates an effortlessly elegant look that’s both practical and timeless.
6. Think About Your Guests’ Comfort
Happy guests create better celebrations—and better photographs.
A few thoughtful touches can make a huge difference during a heat wave:
- Cold water available before and during the ceremony
- Parasols or elegant hand fans
- Sunscreen baskets
- Cooling towels or misting fans
- Plenty of seating for elderly guests
- Light, refreshing cocktails instead of heavy drinks
When guests feel comfortable, they’re more relaxed, more engaged, and more likely to stay on the dance floor well into the evening.
7. Build Flexibility Into Your Timeline
Heat waves can be unpredictable, so it’s always worth allowing a little flexibility throughout the day.
An experienced planner and photographer can often adjust timings by 15–30 minutes if temperatures become extreme. Waiting a little longer before portraits, moving family photos into shade, or delaying a couple’s session until conditions improve can make a remarkable difference.
Some of the best wedding photographs come from adapting to the day rather than rigidly following a schedule.
Bonus Tip: Turn the Heat Into an Advantage With a Pool Party the Next Day
If you’re planning a destination wedding in France, one of the best ways to embrace the summer heat is to make the most of it and organise a pool party the following day.
Rather than trying to avoid the heat completely, create an experience where your guests can relax, cool off and continue celebrating in a more casual setting.
A pool day is especially popular for destination weddings, where friends and family have travelled from different countries and often want more time together beyond the wedding day itself.
Think:
- A relaxed lunch by the pool
- Fresh local food and Provençal-style sharing dishes
- Cold drinks and cocktails
- Pool games and music
- Swimsuits instead of formalwear
- Time to reconnect after the excitement of the wedding
From a photography perspective, these events are also wonderful to capture. The atmosphere is completely different from the wedding day—less structured, more candid, and filled with genuine moments between family and friends.
A summer wedding in France isn’t just about one day; it’s about creating memories across an entire weekend. A pool party transforms the heat from something to manage into something your guests will remember forever.

With a carefully planned timeline, plenty of natural shade, thoughtful design choices and a little flexibility, your wedding can still feel elegant, relaxed and enjoyable for everyone involved.
